Umno’s demands to hold snap polls amid the raging pandemic has been described as wicked and selfish ambition for power.

Urging Malaysians to reject such move, a total of 12 members of parliament, one independent lawmaker and a senator said they were appalled by Umno’s demands at a time when the country was still in the recovery phase.

The statement read that last month, Parliament passed a budget of RM322.5 billion, the largest budget in history, in order to fight Covid-19.

The statement was signed by, among others, Penampang MP Datuk Darell Leiking, MUDA’s Muar MP from Syed Saddiq, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Sungai Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah, Selangau MP Baru Bian and Pulai Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (PEJUANG)’s senator Datuk Marzuki Yahya.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno’s demands to hold snap polls amid the raging pandemic has been described as wicked and selfish ambition for power.

Urging Malaysians to reject such move, a total of 12 members of parliament, one independent lawmaker and a senator said they were appalled by Umno’s demands at a time when the country was still in the recovery phase.

“We have lost enough from years of bad governance and corruption.

“This nation needs to heal and the time to heal is now,” they said in a statement.

The ravages of the pandemic means that the nation needs time to heal, they said, rejecting efforts from any parties to seize power.

The country recorded a total of 1,741 new Covid-19 positive cases on Monday, bringing the total number of infections to 120,818 cases.

“Some states are hit by severe floods and more than 15,000 Malaysians have been displaced.

“On top of this, current rate of unemployment and reduced income for many families during this time of pandemic remains unsettling.

“With this in mind, we are appalled by the continuous demand by Umno to hold snap polls in such a climate.”

The statement read that last month, Parliament passed a budget of RM322.5 billion, the largest budget in history, in order to fight Covid-19.

“Barely three weeks after this people-friendly budget was passed, Umno now wants to use fresh elections to seize more power at the expense of Malaysians’ well-being, health and safety.

“We are reminded of this when Datuk Seri Najib Razak had urged Umno members to defend Putrajaya at all costs.”

The statement was signed by, among others, Penampang MP Datuk Darell Leiking, MUDA’s Muar MP from Syed Saddiq, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Sungai Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah, Selangau MP Baru Bian and Pulai Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (PEJUANG)’s senator Datuk Marzuki Yahya.
