Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof ruled out a vote of no confidence during upcoming one-day parliament sitting, scheduled for the 18th of May 2020.

According to a report, Ariff said the sitting will only feature the opening speech of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and nothing else as he government cited the battle against the coronavirus as a priority.

“I received a letter signed by the prime minister who is the Ketua Majlis, informing that as the Covid-19 outbreak has not been completely subsided, the government had decided that the first meeting of the third session of the 14th Parliament would only take place for a day on May 18.

“There will be no meeting after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s opening address,” Ariff reportedly said.

The meeting was originally supposed to include a few items in the order paper including the declaration of the appointment of the opposition leader as well as the tabling of two supplementary supply bills.

PETALING JAYA: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof ruled out a vote of no confidence during upcoming one-day parliament sitting, scheduled for the 18th of May 2020.

According to a report, Ariff said the sitting will only feature the opening speech of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and nothing else as he government cited the battle against the coronavirus as a priority.

Last week, the speaker approved a motion seeking a vote of no confidence in Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership, brought by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who resigned as prime minister in February.

But Ariff said Muhyiddin later informed him that the government had decided to list only one order of parliamentary business for the day, the opening address by the king, “as the Covid-19 pandemic has not been fully cleared”.

Ariff’s statement meant a no-confidence motion cannot be tabled at this sitting and any such move will have to wait until July 13 at the earliest, when Parliament reconvenes.

Meanwhile, an online portal quoted former Backbenchers Council chief coordinator Ong Ooi Heng as saying once the Speaker accepted a motion, it would only be listed in the order paper and be left alone.

“Unless the PM gives precedence to the motion,” Heng was quoted as saying. “But sooner or later, the PM will have to deal with such a motion. Or else the question of legitimacy will keep arising.”
