Najib Razak said today he will file a defamation suit against outgoing prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin over a claim that there were those who had wanted Muhyiddin to intervene in court matters and free them of criminal charges.
Najib said he also plans to similarly sue Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan. “My lawyer will also apply for action to be taken against Muhyiddin and Wan Saiful for contempt of court,” he said in a Facebook post.
Muhyiddin had alleged earlier this month that he was under pressure from “certain parties” to intervene in the matters of the court in order to set several individuals free from criminal charges.
Separately, Wan Saiful alleged that Najib had asked the then prime minister to remove the judges presiding over his SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption appeal hearing, a charge which Najib later denied.

Muhyiddin had alleged earlier this month that he was under pressure from “certain parties” to intervene in the matters of the court in order to set several individuals free from criminal charges.
He said that these individuals were uneasy over his strict stand in refusing to entertain their demands.
Separately, Wan Saiful alleged that Najib had asked the then prime minister to remove the judges presiding over his SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption appeal hearing, a charge which Najib later denied.
Najib and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are among those who have been taken to court on corruption charges.
Najib said that the Bersatu pair had not provided any proof even when challenged to do so, nor did they lodge any police report about the alleged interference.
Two other PMs “stabbed in the back”
Najib also accused Muhyiddin of having stabbed two other prime ministers in the back in the past.
He said Muhyiddin had backstabbed Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Pakatan Harapan to seize power last year, when Muhyiddin had led Bersatu out of Pakatan Harapan to form Perikatan Nasional with the Barisan Nasional and PAS, among others.
Najib said Muhyiddin had previously backstabbed Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the country’s fifth prime minister, to become Umno deputy president and deputy prime minister.
He rejected Muhyiddin’s claim in his final speech today as prime minister that his failure to save his government was because of certain power hungry individuals.
Najib said that it was Muhyiddin who was power hungry.
“Till now he does not want to admit the main reason why he had to step down was due to his world class failures,” he said, citing drop in foreign direct investments and the worsening pandemic.
Najib also hit out at Muhyiddin for claiming that the easiest way to remain in power was to conspire with kleptocrats but it was something he was not willing to do.
“Did he not forget that it was ‘kleptocrats’ who he had approached when lobbying to become the prime minister last year?”
He also dismissed the claim he had sacked Muhyiddin for speaking out against the 1MDB scandal saying that he had to give his then deputy the boot as he conspired with Mahathir and Mukhriz Mahathir since 2014 to topple him.
And this was way before 1MDB was an issue, he said.
