New AG must be someone who cares for Islam and Royal Institution

The appointment of the country’s next Attorney-General (AG) must take into consideration a candidate who cares about the royal institution and Islam (Peduli Raja, Peduli Islam).

Umno’s strategic communications unit deemed the issue of appointing a new AG as something that must be done intellectually and prudently, in line with the importance of Islam.

The statement comes as the nation is heavily debating the issue of Pakatan Harapan (PH) wanting to appoint senior lawyer Tommy Thomas as the AG, to replace Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali who has been asked to go on a one-month leave.

KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of the country’s next Attorney-General (AG) must take into consideration a candidate who cares about the royal institution and Islam (Peduli Raja, Peduli Islam).

This is in line with a healthy development of religious awareness amongst the people in this country, as well as globally.

In saying this, Umno’s strategic communications unit deemed the issue of appointing a new AG as something that must be done intellectually and prudently, in line with the importance of Islam.

Apart from that, the unit, in a statement said the appointment must go thorough a responsible process in the seniority of Malaysian laws, according to the Federal Constitution.

“Peduli Raja means understanding, respecting and honouring the institution of Malay rulers, while Peduli Islam means the candidate must be a Muslim who possesses full understanding and appreciation of the religion including matters pertaining to Syariah law.

“This is because many legal matters require the approval of the AG, therefore a candidate who does not understand, respect and honour the importance of the institution of Malay Rulers will not understand these principles.

“In fact, there is a possibility for the person to approve actions that may prove disastrous to the rakyat’s confidence in the royal institution,” the unit said in a statement, today.

The statement comes as the nation is heavily debating the issue of Pakatan Harapan (PH) wanting to appoint senior lawyer Tommy Thomas as the AG, to replace Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali who has been asked to go on a one-month leave.

Touching on Syariah jurisprudence, Umno’s strategic communications unit explained that the wisdom of the AG, via the Syariah unit of the AG’s Chambers, is needed to ensure administration actions and matters pertaining to Syariah laws are carried out efficiently and diplomatically.

This criteria is important, it said, as it involves the prerogative or exclusive rights of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Malay Rulers as the heads of religion.

“Therefore, it is proper for the AG to understand the principles of administering Syariah laws in the country so there will be no problems in the execution of laws in Malaysia involving people of various races.

“The purity of the current practise must be maintained and defended,” the statement read.
