UMNO information chief Shahril Hamdan is a hypocrite for suggesting that Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah was disrespectful towards party discipline by holding a press conference together with Tun Dr Mahathir Moahamad and abstaining from the Budget 2021 vote.
Tell me, where was Shahril back when Dato’ Seri Nazri Aziz pledged support for PKR president Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Port Dickson by election?
Where was Shahril when Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi gave all Barisan Nasional members a ‘free pass’ to support whoever they wished, when it was discovered that he himself had pledged support for Anwar together with Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak?
Did it not occur to Shahril that Zahid, being the president of UMNO and chairman of Barisan Nasional, had set a new precedent that deviated from the coalition’s decades-old norms and principles?
Ever since its establishment, Barisan Nasional forbade any of its members, particularly its leaders, from sharing a stage with leaders from other coalitions that stood in contention against it.
Was Zahid’s ‘free pass’ not indicative enough that leaders from Barisan Nasional were now free to support whoever they wished without fear or favour?
How could the Tengku have been disrespectful towards party discipline by sharing a stage with Mahathir when his own president pledged support for Anwar on behalf of all Barisan Nasional Members of Parliament without first consulting them?
Why did the UMNO disciplinary board not convene to sack Zahid back then, or Nazri, Najib and Zahid when the trio pledged support for Anwar, much to the dismay of the majority?
Perhaps it has something to do with Zahid positioning himself as Barisan Nasional’s chief whip, has it not?
See, that’s the problem with Barisan Nasional – it is being led by a suspected criminal, advised by a convicted criminal and has a handful of suspected criminals as chief protagonists.
Not only do these people not represent the ideals and desires of the majority, Zahid himself is in charge of discipline, meaning, he gets to protect himself and his ‘buddies’ even if they breach party discipline.
That explains the gala time Zahid is having – he gets to set new rules whenever it suits him and drown UMNO and Barisan Nasional in the process.
Tell me, was Shahril sleeping when Zahid considered working with the DAP?
There is no leader left in UMNO that could possibly even come within a 10 foot pole distance of the great Tengku, let alone ‘smell’ his credibility, accomplishments, professionalism and potential.
Not only did the Tengku serve as Minister of Finance from 1976 to 1984, he served as Minister of Trade and Industry from 1984 to 1987 and as Chairman of the World Bank, IMF, Asian Development Bank and Asian Development Bank. (Islamic Development Bank).
Better known as Ku Li, the Tengku also knew the ins and outs of Petronas (Petroliam Nasional Berhad) as it was he who founded the oil, gas and investment company in 1974.
While at Petronas, he was appointed as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer by the late Tun Abdul Razak, the 2nd Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The Tengku also held the position of Vice President and Treasurer of UMNO around the 1970s and is wise enough to know when something is amiss.
It is therefore illogical for the Tengku to sink with Barisan Nasional given that the party is almost sure to drown like a charred Titanic in the hands of Zahid and Najib come the 15th general election.
It does, however, make perfect sense for him to team up with Mahathir, yet another legend, to establish a new coalition of like-minded nationalists and patriots who could then soldier forward towards GE15 in hopes of bringing about a new Malaysian Order.
