The marriage of Illi Najwa Sadique, who, based on some reports, is said to be the niece of Minister of National Unity Halimah Mohamed Sadique, has sparked furore among opposition supporters who are questioning PAS’ silence over the affair.
Najwa, a Malaysian Muslim said to be of Pakistani descent, got married to a Manpreet Singh at the Gurdwara Sahib in Jalandhar, Punjab, according to Sikh marital rites.
Many have since accused PAS of practicing double standards over its self-proclaimed mission to uphold the sanctity of Islam.
Back in February, the party’s mouthpiece ripped an AMANAH minister apart after photos and videos of Nur Sajat performing umrah dressed as a woman went viral. This time around, PAS seems silent.
Halimah Mohamed Sadique is a member of UMNO which has a formal working relationship with PAS under the banner of Muafakat Nasional, a non-registered coalition purportedly championing Muslim unity.

IPOH: The marriage of Illi Najwa Sadique, who, based on some reports, is said to be the niece of Minister of National Unity Halimah Mohamed Sadique, has sparked furore among opposition supporters who are questioning PAS’ silence over the affair.
Najwa, a Malaysian Muslim said to be of Pakistani descent, got married to a Manpreet Singh at the Gurdwara Sahib in Jalandhar, Punjab, according to Sikh marital rites.
According to claims, her husband, an Indian Hockey Captain, had not converted to Islam, sparking rumours that Najwa herself may have opted to leave the religion of Islam.
Muslims who complained mostly took issue with her wearing women’s clothes during the pilgrimage and performing the rituals as a woman among female pilgrims, as they accused her of not being a woman.
However, PAS went a step further and released articles via harakahdaily.net titled “Sajat: Mujahid dan K’jaan PH patut dipersalahkan” (Sajat: Mujahid and the PH government are to blame) and “Keterlanjuran Sajat kesilapan Mujahid dan kerajaan PH” (Sajat’s overbearing ways is Mujahid and the PH government’s fault).
The articles were published between the 7th and 13th of February.
On the 14th of October 2020, the minister in question, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, filed a defamation suit against Harakah over the articles which he said were defamatory and malicious in order to tarnish his dignity, credibility and reputation.
This time around, PAS seems silent.

Meanwhile, Illi Najwa was seen wearing a Punjabi bridal costume when she exchanged matrimonial vows with Manpreet on the 16th December.
According to reports, Illi Najwa managed to secure special permission from the Malaysian authorities and India’s Minister of Home Affairs to fly to New Delhi, en route to Manpreet’s hometown, according to New Straits Times.
She left for India via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on 2 December following the relax border and travel restrictions between India and Malaysia recently.
“She managed to secure a flight ticket to New Delhi after obtaining the necessary government clearance,” an International Hockey Federation official was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.
She will stay with her husband Manpreet Singh’s family in Jalandhar
According to an interview in an Indian news portal, The Tribune, Manpreet, when asked if Illi Najwa would return to Malaysia, said: “She will stay with my family here. She is getting accustomed to the Punjabi culture and has already become fond of it. We have given her a Punjabi name, Navpreet Kaur.”
The Tribune interview did not go into details about Illi Najwa’s Punjabi name.
Manpreet, meanwhile, shared briefly about his love story.
“We met in 2012 when I had gone to Malaysia for the Sultan of Johor Cup. She was among the spectators. We had a brief interaction and I was carried away by her charm. I managed to get her phone number and stayed in touch. We got engaged in February 2014,” he said.
Illi Najwa’s mother, Masita, used to play hockey for the Malaysian army.
