“We want to form a third kind of idealism and an alternative that will be based on Islam”
SHAH ALAM: A PAS leader today outlined his party’s ambition to become adviser to the federal government, a role it aims to acquire by winning big in the 14th general election.
The Opposition Islamist party’s head researcher Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki said PAS wants to build its political clout by capturing a third of the states and use it to influence the national agenda.
“For now we do know we cannot take over federal power, not at GE14, Mohd Muhdi said at a PAS event here.
“Our short-term target is to become adviser to the government… by capturing five states and becoming a powerful pressure group,” he added.
At its annual general assembly last month, PAS expressed its plan to take Kedah, Pahang, Terengganu and Selangor and keep Kelantan in the general elections that must be called by mid next year.
Mohd Zuhdi said the party’s plan to co-operate with the federal government was in line with the party’s push for “mature politics”.
He said PAS wants to promote harmony and constructive dialogue, and at the same time provide a third alternative to the two-way dialectics between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan.
“We want to form a third kind of idealism and an alternative that will be based on Islam.
“It will not be antagonistic because Islam is prosperous,” he said.
PAS previously said it wants to play a more constructive role in policy-making even though it is in the Opposition at the federal level.
It claimed fellow Opposition parties PKR and DAP practised destructive and divisive politics and that their sole purpose was to grab federal power.
PKR and DAP countered and accused PAS of being only interested in its own political survival by getting closer to the BN coalition lynchpin, Umno.
