Yesterday, MACC raided the factory, its office as well as the Licensing Department office of the Seberang Prai Municipal Council
GEORGE TOWN: State Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) this afternoon.
Phee was arrested while he was giving his statement at the MACC headquarters to facilitate investigations over an illegal carbon filter factory in Sungai Lembu.
This was confirmed by his lawyer R.S.N. Rayer.
Rayer said he was baffled as to why Phee was arrested as he had gone to the MACC office here to facilitate the probe.
“He (Phee) was having his statement taken before the MACC officers were told there was an instruction from MACC Putrajaya to arrest him.
“He is expected to be produced for remand tomorrow,” he said before leaving the MACC office here.
Rayer said he had personally appealed to the MACC officers here for Phee’s release.
“He has been cooperative,” he added.
Phee arrived at 2.30pm, accompanied by Rayer.
About 11.30am today, five MACC officers had raided Phee’s office in Komtar.
They left more than an hour later with a bag of documents.
Sources said the documents were linked to the operations of the illegal carbon filter factory.
Yesterday, MACC raided the factory, its office as well as the Licensing Department office of the Seberang Prai Municipal Council.
MACC officers were seen entering the council’s building in Bandar Perda about 10.30am and left three hours later with bags of documents.
A 70-year-old superviser of the factory was also detained for questioning.
