Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (PPBM) Penang chapter today said it would stick with Pakatan Harapan despite the defections of two state assemblymen from the party.
TTF was made to understand that the duo cited a”directive from the top” when asked why they had gone against an oath they undertook in March to remain allied with Pakatan Harapan.
Unlike many states, in Penang, there is a clause in the state constitution, under Section 14A, defined as the “anti-party hopping law.”
However, Khalid’s and Zolkifli’s cases were unique, as not only is PPBM divided into two blocks, they were still members of PPBM and had simply changed allegiances to the government block.
PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (PPBM) Penang chapter today said it would stick with Pakatan Harapan despite the defections of two state assemblymen from the party.
According to state PPBM chief Senator Marzuki Yahya, the duo’s decision to support Perikatan Nasional was made in their individual capacities and did not concern Penang PPBM.
“These two members appear to have forgotten that it was support from PH that had led to them winning their seats.
“If they want to be part of the state opposition, then that is their personal decision,” Marzuki was quoted by Free Malaysia Today as saying.
According to a report, the two assemblymen, Khalid Mehtab Mohd Ishaq (Bertam) and Zolkifli Md Lazim (Teluk Bahang) confirmed that they have switched allegiance to the federal-led Perikatan Nasional government.

Penang may see by-elections for two seats after two assemblymen from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) declared that they no longer support the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition state government.
Bertam’s assemblyman Khalid Mehtab Mohd Ishaq together with his counterpart from Teluk Bahang, Zolkifli Md Lazim, confirmed that they have switched allegiance to the federal-led Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
In March, the duo had sworn to be with PH in Penang but, two months later, they have decided to change sides, citing that it was a directive from the top.
This was reported by a media channel as well.
Unlike many states, in Penang, there is a clause in the state constitution, under Section 14A, defined as the “anti-party hopping law.”
Clause (1) of the new article provides that any member of the House elected as a candidate of a political party must vacate his seat upon quitting the party.
However, Khalid’s and Zolkifli’s cases were unique, as not only is PPBM divided into two blocks, they were still members of PPBM and had simply changed allegiances to the government block.
Meanwhile, Penang DAP treasurer and Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai reportedly said the duo must relinquish all privileges and allocations given for their service centres and quit positions held in state government-linked corporations immediately.
He also said the Village Security Development Council (MPKK) members under these two reps’ constituencies will have to be reshuffled as their members are based on political appointments.
He said the same was true for city councillors as well. “They must immediately inform the state assembly speaker of their decision.”
