Perikatan Nasional (PN) must build its own strength and identity, not just rely on “waves” to win elections if it wants to take back Putrajaya, says its secretary-general, Hamzah Zainudin.
He said PN must build a strong foundation based on the coalition’s principles to earn the people’s trust.
“Have we truly become champions who amplify the people’s voices? Have we truly empathised and listened to their concerns? These are questions we must ask ourselves and answer honestly,” he said at a special convention for PN elected representatives today.
“Do not assume that the voters are always with us. Yes, in the last general election, there was an extraordinary wave among the voters, especially the Malays, that led to a big victory for PN. But remember, waves have their ups and downs.”
KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) must build its own strength and identity, not just rely on “waves” to win elections if it wants to take back Putrajaya, says its secretary-general, Hamzah Zainudin.

To earn and maintain the people’s trust, Hamzah said, PN must consistently advocate the relevant issues, particularly those related to the cost of living.
“For the rakyat, it’s an issue that concerns putting food on the table, their livelihoods, their conscience, and how they can live life meaningfully.
“We need to conduct a comprehensive analysis and determine what are the strategies that we should use,” he said.
Hamzah also said it was important to foster a collective spirit of resilience and dedication among all members of the PN coalition, regardless of their positions.
“The recent incidents of betrayal within PN are very disappointing, but everything happens for a reason,” he said, adding that it allows them to distinguish genuine individuals from those driven solely by personal gain.
On Wednesday, Selat Klang assemblyman Abdul Rashid Asari pledged his support for Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, citing PN’s silence on accusations levelled against the Rulers.
This was despite Bersatu voting to amend its constitution to state that MPs and assemblymen will have their membership automatically stripped if they support any other party or policy not aligned with Bersatu’s position.
The amendment, which is subject to approval by the Registrar of Societies, came after six Bersatu MPs pledged their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
They are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).
