The six – Datuk K. Ramachandran, 50; Azhari Shahrom Shaihmi, 56; Mohd Durai Abdullah, 52; Sheikh Ismail Sheikh Hassan, 26; N. Vickneswarar, 28; and a Bangladeshi Kasi Nasrul, 42, nodded in understanding when the charge was read to them before magistrate Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir.
However, Ramachandran was charged with abetting the five in abducting Arumugam who was a property developer.
No pleas were recorded from the accused who were chained together when they arrived at 9.40am at the court premises before they were ushered into the courtroom.
According to the charge sheet Azhari, Mohd Durai, Sheikh Ismail, Vickneswarar, and Kasi Nasul abducted Arumugam with intent to hold him for ransom totalling SGD50 million (RM153 million).
They allegedly committed the offence at Jalan Margosa, Bandar Sri Damansara, here at 10.30am on June 3
Ramachandran, a former PKR candidate for Batang Kali state seat in the 13th general election, was charged with abetting the five at the same place and time.
The five were charged under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961 while Ramachandran was charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code read together with Section 3 of the same Act.
All of them face the gallows or life imprisonment upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Hakim Amir Abdul Hamid did not offer bail saying it was a non-bailable offence.
Counsel R. Sivaraj represented Ramachandran while the other five were unrepresented.
The court fixed Aug 27 for mention.
On June 27, Selangor Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said the victim’s remains were found near Batu 27, Jalan Rawang Bestari Jaya.
He said police had received a report that the victim was kidnapped on June 10.
The kidnappers allegedly contacted the victim’s son on the same day and made a RM50 million ransom demand.
“The victim was kidnapped while exercising at a playground in Jalan Persiaran Perdana, Bandar Sri Damansara, Petaling Jaya, at 10.30am,” he said in a statement.
Fadzil said initial investigations revealed that the mastermind was a person known to the victim.
A source close to the investigation said the mastermind and the victim had been friends and had business dealings together over the years.
“Recently, they had a ‘misunderstanding’ involving financial matters.
“This is most likely the reason behind the victim’s kidnapping and subsequent death,” the source said.
