PETALING JAYA: A report has surfaced claiming that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s stepson, Riza Aziz, could be a witness to give evidence against the former prime minister.
The report, which quoted Deputy Public Prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram, said there is information suggesting Riza may be added to the witness list.
“There is a new development. We have information that Riza may be added to the witness list,” Sri Ram reportedly told trial judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah.
On Thursday, Riza was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court over five counts of money laundering charges involving US$248mil (RM1.25bil) linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Sri Ram, who led the prosecution, said Riza has made several representations since he was first charged.
“An agreement has been arrived at between the prosecution and the accused under the terms of which the Federal Government will receive a substantial sum running into several million ringgit.
“The sum have direct reference to the subject matter of the charges framed in this case,” he said.
Najib, on the other hand, is facing four charges of abusing his position in power to obtain gratification totalling RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds, as well as 21 counts of money laundering involving the same sum.
Najib’s counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, is expected to continue cross-examining the ninth prosecution witness, former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi.
The hearing resumed after a six month break and several postponements due to the movement control order.
