PH’s manifesto pledge is about sustainability, not the repatriation of waste. Sustainability, on the other hand, is about meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Unless the DAP can prove that the construction of a PDF for Lynas to treat its water leach purification (WLP) residue would endanger Malaysians and compromise the safety and well-being of future generations, there is no reason why the government should not stick with the idea.
As a matter of fact, the knowledge transfer gained by building such facilities would allow Malaysian contractors to venture into similar projects in neighbouring countries.
Is that not sustainable economics? Will that not expand the horizons for local contractors and present more job opportunities for future generations as small industries mushroom to support such ventures?
So why is Mahathir bowing down to pressure from a bunch of nitwits who’re clearly being sponsored to cause problems this Sunday?
SUBANG JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should make up his freaking mind regarding the license requirements for Lynas Corp to continue operations in Malaysia.
Previously, the Prime Minister caused a stir among DAP supporters as he agreed to allow the rare earths company to continue operations without the need for it to repatriate its water leach purification (WLP) residue as requisite to renew its license.
At one stage, it even became a comedy of idiocy when the DAP’s Yeo Bee Yin told newsmen that the US800 mil Aussie-corp would still have to resolve the issue of radioactive waste produced at its plant in Pahang before being allowed to continue operations.
Yeo was attempting to clarify a statement made by Mahathir during a press conference in Tokyo. Problem is, the statement bore no reference to the repatriation of waste and merely made mention of the need for Lynas to address the waste problem.
In other words, if you missed Mahathir’s Tokyo presser, all you needed to do was read Yeo’s version of it which basically was a copy-and-paste version of what Mahathir said.
Therein the problem.
You see, many DAP supporters were pissed not so much because Mahathir agreed to allow Lynas to continue operations, but because the DAP conned them into thinking that by doing so, Pakatan Harapan reneged on a manifesto pledge “to govern the country based on the principles of sustainability.”
In the first place, if you take the trouble to study the science behind rare earths mining, you’d begin to understand the lies Lim Guan Eng and his buffoons spread prior to the 14thgeneral election and how these buffoons made fools out of you.
When Mahathir said Lynas would be allowed to continue operations, it wasn’t without condition.
Although the plant no longer needs to repatriate its waste, its owners are required to construct a permanent deposit facility (PDF) for it to treat that waste.
That’s a step in the right direction.
