Rob Reiner, 78, was a prominent figure in American entertainment for more than five decades. He first gained recognition as an actor during an eight-year run on the sitcom “All in the Family” before becoming a director of widely celebrated films, including “This Is Spinal Tap,” “When Harry Met Sally …” and “The Princess Bride.”

In later years, he made cameo appearances in television series such as “New Girl” and “The Bear.” Actor Sean Astin, speaking on behalf of SAG-AFTRA, described him as “one of the most significant figures in the history of film and television.”

Beyond Hollywood, Reiner became an influential presence in Democratic politics at both the state and national level, advocating for causes such as same-sex marriage.

Michele Singer Reiner, 70, worked as a photographer and later as a producer. Her relationship with Rob Reiner left a lasting imprint on his work.

After he noticed her while filming “When Harry Met Sally …” in New York, the two later married, and their real-life romance influenced a pivotal change to the film’s ending. The couple had four children: Jake, Nick, Romy and Tracy.

Nick Reiner had previously spoken publicly about long-running struggles with substance abuse and periods of homelessness that began during his teenage years. He collaborated with his father on the film “Being Charlie,” a project loosely inspired by his experiences.

As news of the deaths spread, tributes poured in from political leaders. Former President Barack Obama, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed grief over the loss.

Newsom said Rob Reiner would be remembered not only for his work in film and television but also “for his extraordinary contribution to humanity.”

The killings occurred in Brentwood, an affluent Los Angeles neighborhood known for its quiet, insular character. Long favored by entertainers, executives and public officials, the area is often described as feeling more like a small town than part of a major city.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing as they seek to establish a full account of what occurred inside the Reiners’ home.
