Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg today brushed off claims by his comrade in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) that the state election could be held before 2021.
Speaking to reporters at the Wisma Bapa in Kuching, Sarawak, GPS chairman said the deadline for the state election to be held is next year.
Yesterday, Dennis called upon the election machinery of all four GPS component parties in the constituency to always be ready to face the polls.
“The Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) has reminded us to be prepared every day for the next state election, which may be held sooner than expected,” he said.

“What is the hurry (to hold the election)? The term ends in 2021, so it will be in 2021, he said.”
Johari’s statement stood in stark contrast to a call made by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.
Yesterday, Dennis called upon the election machinery of all four GPS component parties in the constituency to always be ready to face the polls.
“The Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) has reminded us to be prepared every day for the next state election, which may be held sooner than expected.
“Therefore, I would like to request the election machinery of all four component parties of GPS in Telang Usan to equip yourselves with key information about the state government’s development plans, so that you’re able to explain them to your longhouse folk and at the same time, counter any issue created by our opponents to discredit the GPS,” he said.
The 11th Sarawak state election was held on the 7th of May 2016, and the deadline for the next state election is July, 2021.
