Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) has thrown its support behind Warisan president and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal to be prime minister should the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Plus bloc regain federal power.
According to a news report, PSB said the choice of Shafie will set a precedent for an East Malaysian to hold the highest post in the Malaysian government, adding that its support is consistent with its resolution that the two Borneo states are equal partners to the peninsula.
TTF had previously made note of the plus side in Shafie’s nomination as Prime Minister by pointing out that the decision would earn Mahathir the favour of many Sabah and Sarawak leaders.
Mahathir has since announced the establishment of an independent block together with WARISAN without Anwar or Pakatan Harapan in the picture.
The “Third Force,” as it has come to be known, has already amassed the support of a sizeable number of Sabah and Sarawak leaders, the majority of whom are not in favour of any political collaboration with Anwar at the helm or PAS in the picture.
Mahathir is also said to enjoy the support of a sizeable number of MPs from UMNO’s Team B and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).
“The election of an east Malaysian as prime minister is a goal that all loyal Sarawakians ought to fight for,” PSB said in a statement today.
PSB has two lawmakers in Parliament, namely, Selangau MP Baru Bian and Sri Aman MP Datuk Masir Kujat.
Baru was formerly Sarawak PKR chief and left the party just before the collapse of the PH government in February. Masir resigned from Parti Rakyat Sarawak in 2018.
On the 27th of June 2020, former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad threw a bolt from the blue when announcing his support for Shafie as the opposition’s Prime Minister-designate in the event of snap polls.
This decision came after a week-long impasse within a loose coalition of opposition parties that saw them split between supporting Dr Mahathir or his former deputy Anwar Ibrahim as the PM candidate.
The coalition, Pakatan Harapan Plus, had met at the PKR headquarters and agreed in principle to name Mahathir as the coalition’s Prime Minister candidate and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as his deputy.
However, PKR later backtracked following a separate meeting of its leadership council and insisted that Anwar be named Prime Minister instead.
This led to the DAP and AMANAH taking sides with Mahathir on the basis that PH Plus had achieved a consensus agreement over Mahathir’s nomination during the PH Plus meeting which Anwar himself chaired.
It was later discovered that the impasse had led to an informal meeting between the DAP, AMANAH and team Mahathir on the 25th of June 2020 where Shafie was named PH Plus’ Prime Minister candidate.
During the meeting, both the DAP and AMANAH are said to have agreed to the nomination of Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and Anwar as Deputy Prime Minister II and I respectively.
Elaborating on the choice of Shafie as Prime Minister, Mahathir said the Sabah chief minister was among the first few to oppose the previous Barisan Nasional administration.
“He is also one of the leaders who were victims of the Najib (Razak) administration. He was dropped as a minister and Umno vice-president as he could not accept acts of corruption and theft of the people’s money through the sickening 1MDB scandal.
“Shafie was with Muhyiddin Yassin then. Now, Muhyiddin has left the struggle and returned to the kleptocrats who punished him before.”
