Sarawak PKR has gone on the offensive against the party’s central leadership in the Peninsula with a clear message – it’s Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali or nothing.
In a statement signed by state PKR chief Baru Bian along with seven others, the party’s “top national leaders” were told to listen to members or forget about holding a convention in Sarawak.
Every indicator suggests that Anwar is fearful of Azmin and believes that the latter enjoys majority support in PKR to a point that could derail his premiership ambitions.
The latest statement by Baru Bian and his men serves to drive the point home and suggests that Sarawak PKR is in support of team Mahathir-Azmin ahead of the 15thgeneral election.
PETALING JAYA: Sarawak PKR has gone on the offensive against the party’s central leadership with a clear message – it’s Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali or nothing.
In a statement signed by state PKR chief Baru Bian along with seven others, the party’s “top national leaders” were told to listen to members or forget about holding a convention in Sarawak.
The statement did not name the “top national leaders,” though it is clear that the message was directed at embattled PKR president Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is currently suffering a support deficit within his own party.
On the 12thof November 2019, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution was alleged to have retracted an invitation for Azmin to officiate the PKR Youth National Convention despite an invitation letter being sent out to the party deputy chief.
According to reports, the youth national convention will now be officiated by Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in her capacity as advisor to the PKR central leadership council and Deputy Prime Minister.
On the 15thof November, Azmin spoke of hidden hands that wanted to prevent him from speaking out at the party’s youth convention.
In response, PKR Youth Chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said Azmin was destroying the party by airing party problems in public, which makes no sense whatsoever.
The reason being, Akmal is indirectly admitting that the party is indeed preventing Azmin from speaking to members, leaving the latter no choice but to air his grouses in public.
In any event, it is Anwar who has been spilling the beans on internal party schisms to media every opportunity he gets.
From Azmin’s no-show at PKR leadership meetings to calls for him to resign as party deputy president, Anwar and his men have been going at it in public non-stop instead of calling for a resolution through proper party channels.
On the 22ndof August 2019, PKR Disciplinary Board chairman, Datuk Ahmad Kassim noted that the board, which was asked to review Azmin’s no-show at meetings, had no reasonable justification to take action against him.
Two days later, Anwar began displaying clear signs of desperation when reiterating – for the umpteenth time, in a span of weeks – that he was the next Prime Minister of Malaysia.
According to a news report, Anwar told Turkish broadcaster TRT during an interview that aspiring to become the prime minister is not wrong but it will continue to be a dream until one commands the majority support of the Parliament.
The remark was an apparent swipe at Azmin amid rumours that the PKR deputy president is Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s preferred candidate for the country’s top job.
