But if Anwar is so confident that he has numbers on his side to stage a no-confidence motion against Mahathir, why worry if the Prime Minister accuses him of architecting Sodomy 2019?
Could it be that the PKR president does not have the numbers and is merely ‘buying’ the confidence of MPs so that more will join him?
Why would a ‘lion’ that’s about to pounce on the ‘reindeer’ work so hard to appease the reindeer?
PETALING JAYA: Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim said yesterday that he shared with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad his sympathy for Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali over the latter’s sex scandal.
Last week, Santubong PKR Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz shocked everyone when he confessed to having sex against the order of nature with Azmin in Sandakan.
The sexcapade was featured in three lewd videos, two of which clearly depicted two individuals with features identical to Azmin and Haziq engaging in homosexual acts.
According to Anwar, he made it clear to the Prime Minister that the sexpose amounted to gutter politicking and pointed out that playing the blame game was not an option.
“The two of us also discussed the sex video issue where I repeated the stand that PKR rejects the culture of ‘politik jijik’ (disgusting politics) and despicable politics and also shared feelings of sympathy towards Azmin Ali and his family.
But one wonders why Anwar found the need to tell the Prime Minister what the Prime Minister already knows and made public.
Last Tuesday, Mahathir quipped that he may be the next victim if gutter politics continues in the country, forgetting, of course, that he himself employed gutter tactics when trying to oust Barisan Nasional.
“Nowadays you can produce all kinds of pictures if you are clever enough.
“One day you may also see my picture like that. It would be very funny,” he told reporters after a PPBM dinner in Shah Alam.
So why did Anwar find the need to convey to Mahathir what Mahathir already knows?
Ever since the sex scandal first hit the internet, the PKR president has been a picture of confidence amid calls by his supporters for Mahathir to lay out a transition plan complete with dates and all.
Despite making it ‘clear a hundred times’ that there was no need to pressure the Prime Minister, Anwar refused to silence his supporters, hiding behind the excuse that he could not stop people from voicing their opinions.
That led to more calls for Mahathir to make known his resignation date and even one suggesting that Azmin, his blue-eyed boy, resign as PKR deputy president.
The one who asked Azmin to go was none other than Anwar’s own political secretary, Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak.
The timing for all these calls seemed peculiarly coincidental with the Azmin-Haziq sexpose and pointed to the idea that the scandal was being capitalised by team Anwar to bring team Mahathir down.
