KLANG: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah reminded the people, especially politicians, not to exploit racial and religious issues for political and party gains.
Sultan Sharafuddin said the public should remain aware that issues related to races and religions were extremely sensitive in the country.
“If we wish to express views, it should be done in a civilised and orderly manner without questioning what had been agreed and stated in the Federal Constitution.
“We must protect the hearts and feelings among the races so that our words would not hurt any quarter,” he said during the royal tea ceremony in conjunction with Sultan of Selangor’s 73rd birthday at Padang Mahkota, Istana Alam Shah, here, today.
Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed his grief and regret on the riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya, last month, which saw a firefighter sustained serious injuries during the incident.
He said such incident wouldn’t have occurred if all parties respect the law, cultures, religions and sensitivity of citizens in the multi-racial country.
“Do not destroy everything that we have built together by creating confusion and suspicion among the races and religious beliefs that exist in our community.
“It takes a long period to build a nation, as the English proverb goes, ‘Rome was not built in a day’. However, if we are not careful and become hostile towards each other, the country could be ruined and destroyed in an instant,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sultan Sharafuddin urged Muslims in the state not to get involved with extremism and deviant teachings that were against the faith and religious practice of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah.
“I advise the government, in cooperation with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council and Selangor Islamic Department, to continuously monitor the activities of deviant teaching groups to ensure that they would not confuse Muslims before they become out of control.
“We must continuously carry out investigation and enforcement actions to curb the activities (of deviant teaching groups) at an early stage,” he said.
