Confusion has arisen over Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s political allegiance following a cryptic message posted on the former Youth minister’s Facebook page.
On Sunday, Syed uploaded pictures of him and former Minister of Energy, Science, Technology Yeo Bee Yin with a caption that read, “we need more Youths in Politics, not same oldies fighting for power.”
It is unclear who Syed was referring to with the ‘oldies’ remark, though some speculate that it may be aimed at former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The entry has sparked rumours of a fallout between him and Mahathir following another photograph floating around the internet featuring him in the same room with Najib’s son.

It is unclear who Syed was referring to with the ‘oldies’ remark, though some speculate that it may be aimed at former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Others claim Syed was referring to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and embattled former premier Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, insisting that the term ‘oldies’ wasn’t necessarily a reference to biological age, but years in politics.
Muhyiddin was sworn in as Prime Minister on the 29th of February 2020 following Mahathir’s abrupt resignation from the top job five days earlier.
This effectively made Muhyiddin the first person in the country’s history to be appointed to the position while holding both a parliamentary and state seat at the same time.
Syed has been critical of Muhyiddin ever since, voicing his devastation over the latter’s decision to rub shoulders with persons he described as “kleptocrats.”
In a March interview, Syed told Al Jazeera’s UpFront correspondent Mehdi Hasan that Muhyiddin was the reason he joined politics.
Mahathir has since branded Muhyiddin a traitor with Syed standing alongside the former premier on numerous occasions.
Syed’s latest Facebook entry has sparked rumours of a fallout between him and Mahathir following another photograph floating around featuring him in the same room with Najib’s son.
It is unclear when the photograph was taken.
