There is an age-old wisdom that says, one always expects “bad things happen to others.”
The wisdom may not apply to everyone, but seems to hold insofar as the majority is concerned. It may have something to do with the human trait.
You see, humans are creatures of habit, and that leads them to become creatures of prejudice. To a certain degree, of course.
When a smoker smokes, he typically does so with prejudice. The smoker knows that smoking kills, but so long as he remains healthy, he goes with the habit and thinks, “bad things happen to others.”
Subconsciously, that is.
But that’s only because the human brain responds to stimuli and generates a pattern of responses that is engrained as memory. If the memory is pleasant, it gives rise to habit.
As the habit is prolonged, it triggers a memory pattern at the subconscious level and generates automated actions.
As a result, a smoker will, over time, pull out the cigarette after every meal without thinking, because his brain has been wired to tell him to do so.
The automated response mechanism gradually suppresses his higher thinking faculties, making him think less of the bad effects of smoking.
It’s called ‘conditioning’.
It follows, unless something triggers a thought process that reminds the smoker of cancer, he will not think of it.
And even if he does, as long as the trigger isn’t traumatizing, it will not overcome the conditioning that makes the smoker want to smoke after every meal.
Put simply, as long as the smoker stays fit, he will continue to smoke after every meal and feel ‘deprived’ if he were to break the habit.
To him, “bad things always happen to others.” He subconsciously becomes a creature of habit and a creature of prejudice.
Likewise, when a Member of Parliament (MP) from the government block lies, he typically does so out of habit.
The MP knows that his lies will ultimately cost him and government, but as long as he remains protected, he thinks nothing of it.
To him, “bad things always happen to others.”
After a while, the MP will lie without thinking, because his brain has been wired to make him a liar.
But “bad things” can happen to anyone. If you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time or have done something bad, they can happen to you.
As for the smoker, he is equally at risk of succumbing to cancer as is the smoker next door.
As for the MP, he is equally at risk of getting caught as is the other MP who lies through his teeth.
Many of these MPs from government are so busy lying, they haven’t the faintest idea what is coming their way.
Unless, of course, they hit their heads hard, come to their senses and do what is necessary to save themselves.
