Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) has openly questioned Nurul Izzah’s appointment as economics and finance senior adviser to the Prime Minister.

Its president, Dr Muhammad Mohan, said the appointment will have a bearing on Malaysia’s standing in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI).

Last week, the social media burst into frenzy following a revelation by Nurul herself that she had been appointed economic and finance advisor.

This prompted Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to explain that no salary or allowance was given to his daughter.

However, this did not negate the fact that the appointment files straight in the face of Anwar’s assurance that his government would go all out against cronyism and nepotism.

“Our view is that it gives the wrong signal and if not rectified, it will be a factor that will show up on the CPI,” he said.

He said that the appointment is seen as a problem as it could give rise to issues of conflict of interest and nepotism.
