#TTFCovid19: State-owned media organization China Global TV Network (CGTN) listed Malaysian Health Director General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah as among the world’s top three doctors for being the voice of calm and reason in the battle against Covid-19.

Hailed “The Doctors at the Top,” Noor Hisham was named alongside America’s Anthony Fauci and New Zealand’s Ashley Bloomfield as men who kept calm and were clear in doling out advice devoid of politics for weeks, gaining a loyal following in the process.

Straightforward and reassuring, the trio has consistently focused on facts and refuse to be burdened by policy decisions.

This earned them appreciation from the people, particularly in Malaysia, where politicians across the devide were busy wheeling and dealing late February, bringing efforts to battle Covid-19 to a standstill and risking lives in the process.

State-owned media organization China Global TV Network (CGTN) listed Malaysian Health Director General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah as among the world’s top three doctors for being the voice of calm and reason in the battle against Covid-19.

Hailed “The Doctors at the Top,” Noor Hisham was named alongside America’s Anthony Fauci and New Zealand’s Ashley Bloomfield as men who kept calm and were clear in doling out advice devoid of politics for weeks, gaining a loyal following in the process.

Fauci, 79, is the director of the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAD), while Bloomfield, 54, and Hisham, 56, are directors-general of health in New Zealand’s and Malaysia’s health ministries respectively.

“None of them are cabinet ministers but all three have emerged as the face of their country’s response to COVID-19.

“In daily press briefings that have become must-watch TV, they have updated the public on new cases, calmly explained why lockdown measures are needed and patiently answered questions on how the virus can spread and when a vaccine might be ready.

“Amid an unprecedented global pandemic and as governments worldwide have sometimes been slow to react, introducing confusing measures and sending contradictory messages, Fauci, Bloomfield and Hisham have become voices of reason and sources of calm and reassurance,” a report read.

One Facebook user pointed to Fauci as “the one guy you can trust,” while Hisham has been referred to as a “trusted face” by Malaysians.

Hisham has been Malaysia’s director-general of health since 2013 and continues to work on the side as a senior consultant breast and endocrine surgeon at Putrajaya Hospital, near Kuala Lumpur.

Bloomfield worked in hospitals in the United Kingdom and New Zealand before joining the health ministry and also spent time at the World Health Organization in Geneva.

But expertise aside, the three have impressed with their hard work and have earned huge followings on Facebook and Twitter in their respective countries.

Hisham has been posting updates on Twitter and Facebook late into the night and sometimes into the wee hours of the morning and has been growing visibly tired, prompting dozens of messages from netizens asking him to “please take a rest.”

Ashley has such a huge following that New Zealand newspapers ran headlines last month, noting “Ashley Bloomfield is Finally Having a Day Off.”

“Let us look into the data, the data will tell us whether we need to extend (stay at home measures) or not,” Hisham characteristically told a briefing earlier this month.

“I can predict, but the reality is that we have to base on science and facts.”

Just how much people have come to rely on them shows when they are not sighted for 24 hours or more. Every time Fauci has been absent from a White House briefing, it has prompted online panic over whether he has been fired after – once again – setting Trump straight.

Bloomfield has received extensive praise for his “diligent” and “clear” responses when engaging the press, with many of his countrymen calling for him to be named “New Zealander of the Year”.

Fans of Dr Fauci and Bloomfield have even gone to the extent of setting up fan accounts on social media.

Meanwhile, Dr Fauci has been called a “coronavirus crush” and “national treasure” by The Atlantic and The New York Times, with nearly 15,000 people also signing a Change.org petition to get him voted as People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2020.
