Two Sabah state assemblymen from UPKO quit the party today and announced their allegiance to the Perikatan Nasional led federal government.
In a press conference held in Kota Kinabalu, the duo, Sugut assemblyman James Ratib and Kuala Penyu assemblyman Limus Jury, confirmed that they were now independent assemblymen.
Asked if they would support Tan Sri Musa Aman should the latter seek a comeback as chief minister, Ratib reportedly said he would if the rest of the assemblymen did as well.
The defections are rumoured to have something to do with a recent visit by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin to the state of Sabah.
PETALING JAYA: Two Sabah state assemblymen from UPKO quit the party today and announced their allegiance to the Perikatan Nasional led federal government.
In a press conference held in Kota Kinabalu, the duo, Sugut assemblyman James Ratib and Kuala Penyu assemblyman Limus Jury, confirmed that they were now independent assemblymen.
Jury was UPKO vice-president, while Ratib was a member of the party’s Supreme Council.
The duo reportedly said the move was due to the WARISAN led Sabah government being in opposition to the federal ruling coalition.
“Because of this, it is best for me to leave Upko which is one of the ruling parties in Sabah for the sake of the development and benefit of my constituency,” Ratib was quoted as saying.
Asked if they would support Tan Sri Musa Aman should the latter seek a comeback as chief minister, Ratib reportedly said he would if the rest of the assemblymen did as well.
According to a report, Limus said he had lost confidence in the UPKO leadership which had followed WARISAN’s stand against PN.
The duo’s resignation brings the total number of seats held by the ruling UPKO, WARISAN, PKR and DAP alliance down to 41, still a comfortable majority.
The state’s opposition block, comprising of Sabah STAR, PBS and UMNO, has a total of 19 seats.
The defections are rumoured to have something to do with a recent visit by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin to the state of Sabah.
