GOMBAK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail expressed sadness over Sultan Muhammad V’s resignation as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“It was a very sad announcement but yet, I respect Sultan Muhammad V’s decision to step down.
”He was there when history was made and it is sad to know he is resigning as the Agong,” she said after the Humanitarian Lab 2.0 think tank closing ceremony at International Islamic University Malaysia here, last night.
Wan Azizah also thanked the King for granting a pardon to her husband, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year.
She added that it was during Sultan Muhammad V’s reign that many histories were made, the most significant was the change of government following Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the 14th General Election last May.
“He was the Yang di-Pertuan Agong when PH was made the new government,” Wan Azizah said, adding that she learned of the resignation from the statement issued by the Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara yesterday evening.
The statement said the resignation, done in accordance with Article 32(3) of the Federal Constitution, was effective Jan 6.
