“It is interesting to note how Gobind implied that Najib was Guan Eng’s “arch enemy,” and it’s funny how the logic of “bribing one’s arch enemy to avoid harm by said enemy” eludes Gobind”

Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli told the Sessions Court yesterday that former premier Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was bribed RM22 million to protect Lim Guan Eng.
Zarul, the owner of a company that was awarded the controversial RM6.34 billion Penang undersea tunnel project, explained that the bribe was channelled through a middleman to stop the MACC from investigating the project.

The middleman, Gnanaraja, has since been charged with cheating Zarul and also had his title revoked by the Pahang Palace in 2019.
Lim’s counsel, Gobind Singh Deo, argued that the Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd (ZCSB) director lied about his intention to protect the former Penang chief minister as the payment was made for his own benefit.
Gobind then questioned Zarul on why the 63-year-old entrepreneur had to pay Najib, Guan Eng’s arch enemy, a large sum of money to protect Lim who is from the opposition party.
To this, Zarul said it made sense to him.
It is interesting to note how Gobind implied that Najib was Guan Eng’s “arch enemy,” and it’s funny how the logic of “bribing one’s arch enemy to avoid harm by said enemy” eludes Gobind.
Gobind also suggested that Zarul had given money to several heavy weight politicians including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob nine years ago, which the latter disagreed with.
Lim is facing four charges of using his position as chief minister to solicit gratification to help Zarul’s company secure the tunnel project and is alleged to have sought 10 percent of profits derived from the project by said company.
He is also accused of receiving RM3.3 million for himself and causing two plots of land belonging to the state government to be disposed of to two companies linked to the tunnel project.
Question is, has the MACC investigated Najib over Zarul’s RM22 million bribe claim or is the anti-graft agency planning to do so?
