Zahid invites KJ, Ku Li to join new Umno leadership

Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has invited  his defeated rivals at the party polls to be part of the Umno leadership.

He said he would call for a Supreme Council meeting as soon as possible and among those to be considered for the future of the party would be the manifesto of all presidential contenders in the just concluded party polls.

KUALA LUMPUR: New Umno president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has invited  his defeated rivals at the party polls to be part of the Umno leadership.

“There are no losers in this party polls. Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Khairy Jamaluddin are leaders who are recognised for their contribution and continue to be needed to revive Umno. I’m inviting them to be with the new leadership to rebuild the party.” he said in a statement last night.

He also said he would call for a Supreme Council meeting as soon as possible and among those to be considered for the future of the party would be the manifesto of all presidential contenders in the just concluded party polls.

Zahid described the open contest in the party election as a historic democratic process as an immediate measure to ensure the party remains relevant in the country’s political arena.

He said the elections was a democratic process demanded by all members and the party managed to implement it at every level of position which saw the top party post being contested after the last one was held in 1987.

Zahid, who was previously the vice-president carrying out the duties of party president, was elected Umno president when he won 93 votes far ahead of Khairy, who received 51 votes and Razaleigh (23 votes).

“Indeed, the smooth election is a manifestation of Umno members who love the party and want the party to recoup to remain relevant on the nation’s political stage,” he said.

Zahid also called on members to close ranks and work to defend the interests of the people.

“We will keep moving forward in unison. The people are very hopeful that Umno continues to fight for the interests of our religion, nation and country ,” he said.
