Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today announced that the party will not be part of Perikatan Nasional and instead concentrate on strengthening Muafakat Nasional alongside Pas.

The Bagan Datuk Member of Parliament, however, made it clear that despite the new approach, he was not announcing Umno’s decision to pull out of the Perikatan Nasional government.

Zahid also announced that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had also indicated Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) interest to join Muafakat.

He said Muhyiddin had expressed this during a meeting with Barisan Nasional members of parliament on Wednesday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today announced that the party will not be part of Perikatan Nasional and instead concentrate on strengthening Muafakat Nasional alongside Pas.

The Bagan Datuk Member of Parliament, however, made it clear that despite the new approach, he was not announcing Umno’s decision to pull out of the Perikatan Nasional government.

“My decision is that we are not going to participate in the formation of Perikatan Nasional. It is not that we are pulling out.

“My decision here is to announce that we are not going to participate in the formation of Perikatan Nasional…not to be a component member if it was to be registered,” he said, adding the decision was final.

Zahid said he would leave it to Pas and the Muafakat leadership council to decide on Bersatu’s intention.

“The council had previously decided that Umno and Pas will be giving priority to strengthen our co-operation.

“Now, with Bersatu’s interest to also join us, I leave it to the council to decide whether their entry will contribute to our strength,” he said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur courts complex today.

Asked how long it will take for Muafakat Nasional to decide on Bersatu’s desire to join them, Zahid said he will be discussing the matter with Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and the Muafakat leadership council.

“We will be celebrating Hari Raya Haji first and only after that we will start looking at all this political matters,” he replied when asked how long it will take before a decision was made.

Zahid said support for the Perikatan Nasional all this while was only based on the support of Umno and Barisan Nasional members of parliament as well as state assemblymen in the formation of the Federal Government and in certain states.

Asked why Umno was not joining Perikatan, Zahid said it was decided by the party supreme council in its meeting on July 24.

“The decision that Umno should not become a component of Perikatan Nasional was made then.

“We took into account the fact that we had already signed the Muafakat Nasional charter and memorandum of understanding with Pas….we feel it is the best platform for Umno, Pas and Barisan Nasional component parties to face whatever eventuality,” he said.

In the Dewan Rakyat, the Barisan Nasional has 43 seats, followed by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (31), PAS (18), GPS (18), PBS (1) PH (91), Warisan (9), Upko (1), PSB (2) and Independent (7).

Asked if the recent court decision on Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s case where the former Umno president was jailed 12-years and fined US210 million had anything to do with Umno’s decision to pull the brakes on Perikatan Nasional, Zahid said: “I leave that to the media to interprete.”

On developments in Sabah where the state assembly had been dissolved, Zahid said the political crisis in the state should be best settled through fresh elections.

He said power must be returned to the people for them to give a fresh mandate to a new government.
