Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has questioned the rationale behind a decision to only allow a royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong during the upcoming one-day sitting by the Dewan Rakyat, scheduled for the 18th of Mat 2020.
“So, what kind of sitting is this where we are to only listen to what the government has to say through the Agong’s speech? This is not a Parliament sitting,” he said.
Mahathir added that he had planned to explain reasons behind his no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the sitting.
“It looks like there is an attempt to stop me from speaking as an MP. What kind of government is this when an MP cannot speak?”

PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has questioned the rationale behind a decision to only allow a royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong during the upcoming one-day sitting by the Dewan Rakyat, scheduled for the 18th of Mat 2020.
According to a news report, the former premier said Members of Parliament would usually be allowed to debate the king’s speech.
“But now we can’t debate it. This does not fulfil the rules of the Dewan Rakyat.
“So, what kind of sitting is this where we are to only listen to what the government has to say through the Agong’s speech?
“This is not a Parliament sitting,” he said.
Mahathir added that he had planned to explain reasons behind his no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the sitting.
Earlier today, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof ruled out a vote of no confidence during upcoming one-day parliament sitting, scheduled for the 18th of May 2020.
According to a report, Ariff said the sitting will only feature the opening speech of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and nothing else as he government cited the battle against the coronavirus as a priority.
Last week, the speaker approved a motion seeking a vote of no confidence in Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership, brought by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who resigned as prime minister in February.
But Ariff said Muhyiddin later informed him that the government had decided to list only one order of parliamentary business for the day, the opening address by the king, “as the Covid-19 pandemic has not been fully cleared”.
“I received a letter signed by the prime minister who is the Ketua Majlis, informing that as the Covid-19 outbreak has not been completely subsided, the government had decided that the first meeting of the third session of the 14th Parliament would only take place for a day on May 18,” he said.
But according to Mahathir, the government was doing this to prevent him from speaking.
“It looks like there is an attempt to stop me from speaking as an MP. What kind of government is this when an MP cannot speak?”
